Balance Between Penny Wise and Pound Foolish

The entirety of my Friday was spent in meticulous preparation for Monday’s early morning Personalized Job Search Session at EDD (Employment Development Department).  In essence, an unemployment audit.  The blunt language emphasizes this fact, stating missing appointment potentially jeopardizes unemployment checks.

After working with my outplacement counselor to build my case with documentation of what I have been working on for the last month, I received a call that scuttled my Friday night plans.  A former business associate called to say hello.  I asked her what her appointment was like. “They stop at the form-you must have it filled out with applications you have made.”

Unemployment’s purpose and indeed their funding is for fundamentally at odds with the wisdom in finding suitable work you are qualified for and that meets your interests.  The trap to is to grab whatever and prepare to be back on Unemployment Insurance a few months later or, worse, be forced to quit/fired and thus not on unemployment.  No longer a drain on Unemployment’s resources, this action leads to further repercussions of non-employability.  The trick is to enough to satisfy the requirements of Unemployment in order to maintain the focus on networking activities.  This required diversion in focus from learning to network to tossing resumes into the internet black hole is something I suppose I will need to learn to balance.
